Getting Started

How do I install ZapVox?β–Ό
Visit the Chrome Web Store and click "Add to Chrome." ZapVox also works on Microsoft Edge and other Chromium-based browsers. After installation, open WhatsApp Web and you'll see transcription buttons on audio messages.
How do I transcribe an audio message?β–Ό
Once installed, a small transcription button (β–Ά Transcribe) appears next to every audio message on WhatsApp Web. Click it and ZapVox will convert the audio to text. By default, it uses the on-device Whisper model β€” completely free, no account needed, and your audio never leaves your browser.
Do I need an account to use ZapVox?β–Ό
No. Local transcription (Whisper) works without any account. You only need a Google account if you want to use cloud features (Pro plan, translations, summaries, or cloud transcription). Signing in with Google also starts a free 7-day trial of Pro features.
Which languages are supported?β–Ό
ZapVox supports 99+ languages for transcription through the Whisper model, including Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, and many more. The interface is available in English and Portuguese. Translation supports 30+ languages on the Pro plan.
What is auto-transcription?β–Ό
Auto-transcription automatically transcribes new audio messages as they arrive β€” no clicking needed. You can enable it in Settings. It requires explicit consent and can be turned off at any time. Auto-transcription respects your daily limits and transcription method (local or cloud).

What is local (Whisper) transcription?Freeβ–Ό
Local transcription uses the Whisper AI model running entirely inside your browser. Your audio is processed on your computer β€” nothing is sent to any server. It's completely free and unlimited on all plans. The first transcription may take a moment to load the model, but subsequent ones are faster.
What is cloud transcription?Proβ–Ό
Cloud transcription sends your audio to a high-powered AI server for faster, more accurate results β€” especially for noisy audio, accents, or less common languages. It's available on the Pro plan (unlimited) and Trial (15/day). Audio is processed and immediately discarded; it is never stored on our servers.
What is BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)?β–Ό
BYOK lets you use your own Groq or OpenAI API keys for cloud transcription. This is available on any plan (including Free) and doesn't count toward daily limits. Your keys are encrypted with AES-GCM 256-bit and stored locally β€” they never reach our servers. You're responsible for any API costs from your provider.
Can ZapVox translate transcriptions?Proβ–Ό
Yes! On the Pro plan, you can translate transcriptions into 30+ languages with one click. Free plan users get up to 30 English translations per day using the local Whisper model. Translations are powered by DeepL and Google Gemini for high accuracy.
Can ZapVox summarize audio messages?Proβ–Ό
Yes. Pro users can generate concise summaries and extract key topics from any transcription. This is especially useful for long voice messages β€” get the key points in seconds instead of listening to minutes of audio.
Why is the transcription inaccurate?β–Ό
Transcription quality depends on several factors:
  • Audio quality: Background noise, low volume, or poor microphone quality reduce accuracy
  • Accents and dialects: Heavy accents may reduce recognition accuracy
  • Language: Some languages have higher accuracy than others
  • Model: Cloud transcription (Pro/BYOK) is generally more accurate than local Whisper
Tip: Try switching to cloud transcription or BYOK for better results on difficult audio.

Is ZapVox really free?β–Ό
Yes! Local transcription via Whisper is completely free and unlimited on all plans β€” forever. No account, no credit card, no limits. The Free plan also includes up to 30 English translations/day. The Pro plan ($3.99/month) adds unlimited cloud transcription, multi-language translation, summaries, and removes the watermark.
How does the free trial work?β–Ό
When you sign in with Google for the first time, you automatically get a 7-day free trial of Pro features β€” no credit card required. During the trial, you get up to 15 cloud operations per day and access to all Pro features. After 7 days, your account reverts to the Free plan. No charges are made during the trial.
What does the Pro plan include and how much does it cost?β–Ό
The Pro plan includes unlimited cloud transcription, multi-language translation, summaries, topic extraction, and removable watermark. Pricing:
  • Monthly: $3.99/month
  • Annual: $27.99/year (save 41%)
  • Biennial: $47.99/2 years (save 50%)
Prices are in USD but automatically converted to your local currency at checkout (Adaptive Pricing by Stripe).
How do I cancel my subscription?β–Ό
You can cancel anytime from the ZapVox extension popup (Settings β†’ Manage Subscription) or through the Stripe billing portal. After cancellation, you keep Pro access until the end of your current billing period. No further charges will be made.
What is the refund policy?β–Ό
In compliance with Brazilian Consumer Code (CDC Art. 49), you can request a full refund within 7 calendar days of purchase, for any reason, no questions asked. This is a legal right for all online purchases under Brazilian law. After 7 days, no refunds are issued β€” but with the 7-day free trial + 7-day withdrawal period, you have up to 14 days to evaluate the service risk-free. To request a refund, email [email protected].
What payment methods are accepted?β–Ό
Payments are processed securely by Stripe. We accept major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.). Prices are listed in USD but are automatically converted to your local currency at checkout. ZapVox never stores your card data β€” all payment information is handled directly by Stripe.

Privacy & Security

What data does ZapVox collect?β–Ό
ZapVox is designed with privacy first. Local transcription processes audio entirely in your browser β€” no data is sent anywhere. When using cloud features, only the audio being transcribed is sent (and immediately discarded after processing). We collect your email for account management and basic usage metrics. We do not collect browsing history, contacts, photos, messages, location, or any data outside of WhatsApp Web audio. See our full Privacy Policy.
Is my audio stored on your servers?β–Ό
No. Audio sent for cloud transcription is processed in real-time and immediately discarded. We never store, record, or retain any audio content. Transcription results are cached locally in your browser for up to 7 days (to avoid re-processing), but never on our servers.
Are my BYOK API keys safe?β–Ό
Yes. Your API keys are encrypted with AES-GCM 256-bit encryption and protected by PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations and a unique random salt per user. They are stored exclusively in your browser's local storage and never transmitted to our servers. When you use BYOK, your keys go directly from your browser to Groq/OpenAI.
Does ZapVox comply with LGPD/GDPR?β–Ό
Yes. ZapVox complies with Brazil's LGPD (Lei Geral de ProteΓ§Γ£o de Dados), the EU's GDPR, and California's CCPA. You have the right to access, correct, delete, and export your data at any time. To exercise your rights, email [email protected]. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
How do I delete my data?β–Ό
You have two options:
  • Clear privacy data: Open ZapVox β†’ Settings β†’ "Clear local privacy data" to remove diagnostic logs and contact name caches without affecting your settings.
  • Clear all extension data: Go to chrome://extensions, click "Details" on ZapVox, then "Clear site data." This removes all cached transcriptions, settings, and BYOK keys.

Troubleshooting

ZapVox buttons don't appear on WhatsApp Webβ–Ό
Try these steps:
  • Refresh the page: Press Ctrl+R (or Cmd+R on Mac) on WhatsApp Web
  • Check if ZapVox is enabled: Click the puzzle icon in Chrome toolbar and make sure ZapVox is active
  • Reload the extension: Go to chrome://extensions, find ZapVox, and click the refresh icon
  • Clear cache: Sometimes browser cache can cause issues β€” try clearing it or using an incognito window

The first transcription is very slowβ–Ό
On the first use, ZapVox needs to download the Whisper AI model (~40MB). This is a one-time download β€” the model is cached in your browser for future use. After the initial download, local transcription typically takes just a few seconds. If it's still slow, try closing other resource-heavy tabs or switching to cloud/BYOK transcription for faster results.
Transcription fails or shows an errorβ–Ό
Common causes and fixes:
  • "Network error": Check your internet connection (only needed for cloud/BYOK transcription)
  • "Daily limit reached": You've used all your cloud transcriptions for today. Local (Whisper) transcription is always unlimited
  • "Invalid API key" (BYOK): Verify your API key in Settings β†’ BYOK. Make sure it hasn't expired
  • Audio too short/long: Very short clips (<1 second) or very long ones (>20 minutes) may fail. For long audio, try cloud transcription
Does ZapVox work on Edge, Firefox, or Safari?β–Ό
ZapVox works on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (and other Chromium-based browsers like Brave and Vivaldi). It does not currently support Firefox or Safari, as these browsers use different extension APIs. We recommend Chrome or Edge for the best experience.
ZapVox stopped working after a WhatsApp Web updateβ–Ό
WhatsApp Web occasionally updates its interface, which can temporarily affect ZapVox. We monitor for these changes and release updates as quickly as possible. Make sure you have auto-updates enabled for extensions in Chrome. If the issue persists for more than 24 hours, please report it to [email protected].
