On June 16, 2025, Meta announced the first ads on WhatsApp: ads in Status, inside the Updates tab, promoted Channels in the directory, and a monthly subscription for exclusive Channel content. On February 26, 2026, WhatsApp itself said ads in Status and promoted Channels were available worldwide. So the short answer, as of September 24, 2026, is yes: ads can already show up on your phone, but only in the Updates tab. Personal chats still carry no ads and remain end-to-end encrypted.

Channel subscriptions are the one piece that, as far as we could find, has not launched yet. And the question people keep asking in work groups is not really about the ads. It is about privacy: will Meta read my chats to decide what to show me?

This piece is part of our WhatsApp news series: what Meta ships, with a date and a source, kept apart from rumor.

What Meta announced in June 2025

In the official WhatsApp blog post, the three features arrived together, all in the Updates tab, the same place that holds Status and Channels. According to Meta, 1.5 billion people use that tab every day. That is not a quiet corner of the app.

  • Ads in Status. A business shows up between your contacts' Status updates, and you can start a chat with it about the product or service it is promoting.
  • Promoted Channels. A Channel admin pays for the Channel to stand out when you browse the directory for new ones.
  • Channel subscriptions. You pay a monthly fee to get exclusive updates from a Channel you follow.

The most important sentence sits in the middle of the announcement: if you only use WhatsApp to talk to friends and family, nothing changes for you. Ads stayed out of the Chats tab, and Meta has repeated that point in every statement since.

Are WhatsApp ads live everywhere, including Brazil?

In June 2025 Meta said it would roll everything out slowly over the following months. The next step came on February 26, 2026, in a post from WhatsApp's official account: promoted Channels and ads in Status were "available globally now," and people would likely start seeing them in the Updates tab if they had not already.

The post does not list countries, and the official source never names Brazil. What can be said with confidence: the rollout was announced as global, and Brazilian tech press spotted promoted Channels carrying the local "sponsored" label the very next day. If you have not seen any ads yet, the rollout may not have reached your account, and updating the app is the first thing to try.

The European Union took a different path. In March 2026, in a report sent to the European Commission, Meta said it would bring Status and Channel ads to the bloc within weeks, along with a subscription for people who would rather not see them. No official source we found offers that subscription in Brazil.

What data Meta uses to pick an ad, and what it says it does not use

Here Meta was specific. To decide which ad to show, WhatsApp uses limited information: your country or city, your language, the Channels you follow and how you interact with the ads you see. People who added WhatsApp to Meta's Accounts Center fall under a second rule, where ad preferences and information from their other Meta accounts, such as Instagram and Facebook, also count.

Then comes the list of what stays out. Your personal messages, your calls and the groups you belong to are not used to choose ads. The company also says it will never sell or share your phone number with advertisers, and that messages, calls and Status updates remain end-to-end encrypted. No one, not even WhatsApp, can see or hear them.

In practice, it works like this. Talking about the gym all day in a group chat should not turn into a gym ad in your Status feed. Following three recipe Channels, on the other hand, can matter. The line Meta drew separates what you do in the Chats tab from what you do in the Updates tab.

Can I control or turn off the ads?

Turning them off entirely in Brazil is not something we found a way to do. What exists are adjustments. The first is the simplest: the ad appears in the same format as a Status update, and you can skip to the next one like any other.

The second is the three-dot menu on the ad itself. According to WABetaInfo, which followed the rollout in February 2026, that is where you can hide a business's ads or block the advertiser. WhatsApp's Help Center also has a page on how to view and adjust your ad preferences in Status and Channels.

The third is Accounts Center. If WhatsApp is not linked to it, Meta says it only uses that short list: country or city, language, Channels followed and interaction with ads. Linking the accounts is what brings Instagram and Facebook signals into WhatsApp.

What changes for small businesses

For anyone who sells, Status has become a shop window. On the WhatsApp Business ads page, Meta explains that the ad appears between regular Status updates and can send people to a WhatsApp chat, to the company's website and, soon, to its app. When the destination is the chat, whoever taps the ad lands straight in a conversation with the business.

That changes how a business gets found. Until now, a new customer reached a shop on WhatsApp through a referral, a business card or an ad on Instagram. Now they can find the business inside WhatsApp itself, between a sister's Status and a neighbor's. Promoted Channels do the same for anyone who publishes content: the bakery posting the afternoon bread or the school announcing enrollment can pay to show up in the directory.

To create an ad, Meta points to Ads Manager, the same tool used for Facebook and Instagram, and WhatsApp's Help Center has instructions for creating Status ads from the WhatsApp Business app. The official sources we checked do not list a minimum price or any rule specific to Brazil.

What changes for people who serve customers on WhatsApp

An ad that opens a chat has an effect few people work out before hitting the button: more people arriving at once, and a lot of them arriving by voice note. A clinic's front desk that advertises a checkup in Status can get in one morning what used to come in over a week. A furniture store salesperson starts fielding chats opened by strangers who want to know delivery times and shipping costs, often in a two-minute voice message.

The same goes for the accountant advertising help with registering a small business, for the lawyer promoting a Channel with employment-law tips and for the agency putting a client in Status for the first time. Paying for the ad and then taking hours to reply is the worst outcome. The person opened the chat because they were in a hurry, and a competitor is one tap away.

On a computer, where many businesses handle support, one option is ZapVox, a WhatsApp Web extension that transcribes, summarizes and translates voice notes. New voice notes arriving in the open chat turn into text on their own, and the summary pulls together what was said in the last 24 hours when a conversation gets long. You can read the customer's question in seconds and answer what they actually asked, without listening to everything again.

Where this stops

  • On Brazil: the official source says "globally" and lists no countries. We did not find a Meta statement specific to Brazil.
  • On Channel subscriptions: announced in June 2025, with no official launch date as of September 24, 2026. When one appears, this piece gets an update.
  • On data: everything here is what Meta says it uses and does not use. Users have no way to audit that on their own.
  • On ZapVox: it only works on WhatsApp Web, on a computer, not in the phone app, which is where the ads appear. The Free plan has a daily quota, and the whole-chat summary is part of Starter, Pro and the free trial.
  • Audio goes to the cloud. To become text, it is sent to a transcription service. Keep that in mind before using it on chats with sensitive customer data.
