Have you ever received an important WhatsApp message and, before reading it carefully, the person deleted it? It might have been a normal regret, it might have been someone trying to hide something. Either way, you're left with that nagging feeling of "I lost the info".

ZapVox has an opt-in feature that helps with that: preserve incoming messages locally as they arrive, so if they get deleted later, you still have access to the original content.

Let me explain how it works — no hype, no promise of miracles, with the real limits.

What the feature does (and what it does NOT)

Does:

  • Keeps a local cache in your browser of new messages coming into WhatsApp Web while the extension is active
  • When a message is deleted, shows a green 🔓 View original (ZapVox) button instead of "Message deleted"
  • Works with text, audios, photos, videos and documents — any media received
  • Local cache of 7 days, auto-purges after that

Does NOT:

  • NOT recover messages deleted before the extension was installed/active in that conversation — no magic history
  • NOT recover edited messages — only captures the first state, subsequent edits are not versioned
  • NOT work on WhatsApp mobile or Desktop — only WhatsApp Web in the browser
  • NOT see groups you never opened — you need to open the chat at least once for the extension to start observing

Why it's opt-in (you have to enable it)

The feature is off by default. To turn on, go to extension Settings and toggle "Recover deleted messages".

Why opt-in? Ethics. When someone deletes a message, there's usually a reason — could be simple regret, could be correcting wrong info, could be privacy. The person made a conscious choice.

ZapVox doesn't make that decision for you. If you want to preserve messages, you enable it. If you don't (or if you'd rather respect the deleter's choice), leave it off.

And even with the feature on, ZapVox does NOT automatically replace "Message deleted" with the original. It shows the 🔓 View original button. You have to click to see. Conscious decision, every time.

When it makes sense to use

Customer support

Customer sends an order number, then deletes it because "it was wrong". You need the number to investigate the original order (even if wrong, it may have been logged). Recover it via the extension and move on.

Work

Colleague sends an audio with an instruction, then deletes because they sent to the wrong person. But the instruction was for you too. You recover, confirm the content, continue your day without having to ask "what was it again?".

Documentation of professional conversations

In contexts where you need written records (clinics, law, consulting), preserving deleted messages ensures important decisions don't get lost to a typo or last-minute regret.

When NOT to use

Straight up:

  • Spying on a partner: bad idea. Ethics aside, if a relationship has reached the point of wanting to see deleted messages, the problem is bigger than what an extension can solve.
  • Legal evidence: courts generally don't accept screenshots of "Message deleted — recovered by extension" as evidence. For legal records, use a notary or formal deposition.
  • Conversations with expected privacy: if you agreed "let's talk about this here off the record", respecting deleted messages is part of the deal.

The feature's own privacy

To be clear about privacy from your side:

  • Cache stays 100% in your browser (local storage). Nothing goes to our server.
  • Auto-purges in 7 days. Old messages disappear even if you do nothing.
  • You can clear everything any time: chrome://extensions → ZapVox → Details → Clear site data.
  • If you uninstall the extension, all caches go with it.

How to enable (step by step)

  1. Have ZapVox installed and signed in with Google
  2. Open the extension popup (icon in Chrome toolbar)
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Toggle "Recover deleted messages"
  5. Read the disclaimer and confirm
  6. Done — from now on, new messages go into the cache

Remember: only preserves messages that arrive after activation. Messages already deleted before enabling will not come back.
